When should I fish with the Ducks Dun?

This graph shows trends of when fly fishermen use the Ducks Dun to fish with and what hooks are most popular throughout the fly-fishing season.

About the Ducks Dun Trout Fly

The Ducks Dun is a fly pattern designed to imitate the dun stage of the mayfly; the stage when the mayfly is emerging from its nymphal shuck and is in the process of becoming a winged adult. This pattern is tied with CDC (Cul de canard) feather, a buoyant feather from the preen gland of ducks, tied to imitate the natural look of the mayfly dun.

This fly is particularly effective when fish are rising to duns; they find it an easy and ample food source, so make sure you have this pattern for when duns are on the water.

It can be used to target a variety of freshwater fish species, such as trout and grayling.

Expert Tip:

CDC is a popular material for dry flies, as it has a natural buoyancy and it can absorb water, which allows the fly to sit low in the surface film, mimicking the natural appearance of the mayfly dun. The CDC feather is often used for the wings, tail and body of the fly, and it is usually tied with a light-colored thread.
