About the Rat Faced McDougall Trout Fly

The Rat Faced McDougall is one of the best flies for rough water. It is an excellent attractor and dropper indicator.

Originally called the Beaverkill Bastard it's name was changed when a young lady visitor asked the name of the fly Harry Darbee was tying. Not wishing to embarrass her, he asked her to name the fly, which brought forth the suggestion Rat faced McDougall and it has been called that ever since.

Pattern Dressings

  • Hook : 10-12.
  • Thread : Black or white.
  • Tail : Ginger hackle.
  • Body : Tan/grey deer hair, spun and clipped to shape (caribou).
  • Wing : Grizzle hackle tips (white calf tail).
  • Hackle : Ginger.

Larger size hooks for Salmon , Steel head etc. Feather wings later changed to white calf tail. Mustad 9671 or equivalent 2 x 1.
