July is an exciting month for fly fishing. With longer days, warmer waters and sudden showers, insect life is still plenty, with opportunities to make the most of your time on the water.
As temperatures rise, trout often retreat to cooler, deeper waters during the heat of the day. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to catch them, when they come up to feed on hatching insects in the surface; as can be seen in our chart, surface flies are the way to go.
The Pearly daddy has been the most popular pattern this month so far, with the Black Shipman and Grey Wulff tying jointly in 2nd position. CDC's have proven well due to their buoyancy, and our Terrestrials (mostly snails) have also been highly popular. Will we get a Flying Ant hatch one day this month? We have the perfect 'fly' for this occasion!
These trending flies show a great impression of what is happening on the water at the moment, and directly shows what patterns other fisherman are using to catch those fish!
