About the Peacock and Black Trout Fly

The Peacock and Black fly is a type of nymph fly pattern that is typically used to imitate the larval and pupal stages of aquatic insects, such as mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies. The Peacock and Black pattern is characterised by its use of peacock herl in its head and pheasant tail for the body and tail, which is usually black in colour, to create a realistic representation of the insect's body

This fly is designed to imitate the underwater stages of the insects, it's usually weighted with a bead or wire to make it sink quickly, allowing you to fish it at the right depth where the fish are feeding.

Expert Tip:

The Peacock and Black is best used on a long leader and left to hang in the wind. This technique is known as "dead drifting" which allows the fly to move naturally with the current, and can be very effective in imitating the movement of a live insect as it drifts downstream. The long leader allows the fly to move more naturally and can help to avoid spooking the fish.

Using a long leader will only cause frustration and spoil your day if the leader is too long for your own personal comfort to cast. Trim it to suit, but don't trim the fine tippet end.
