About the Draper Stonefly Nymph Trout Fly

An imitation of a bottom dweller the Draper Stonefly Nymph is a great fly to fish along the lake bed.

The fly has been created so that it swims point up which leads to a relatively snag free hook.

Expert Tip:

In still waters, especially in small fisheries, you almost always find a big trout or two located in the deeper water. Check them out!

Pattern Dressings

  • Hook : 6-16.
  • Thread : Colour to suit 6/0.
  • Tail : Biots.
  • Weight : Add at this stage. Keep flat.
  • Body : Furry foam or dubbing.
  • Legs : Biots either side of shoulder.
  • Thorax : Dubbing to suit.
  • Wing Pads : Your choice.
  • Head : Tie off and varnish.

The double shank adds extra weight tending to rotate this hook to swim point up. I add extra weight to ensure the point rides up and to get the fly down. The hook however can present problems when tying the initial thread wraps as the angled shoulders and brazings at the bend both have slippery surfaces. I overcome this by tying on a very thin foam strip in front of the shoulders, wrapping this foam down to the bend and back to the thread before removing the surplus foam. The thread can now be wrapped to any position.
