How to fish with an intermediate line

Intermediate fly lines are slow sinking lines that have been purposely designed to fish in the upper layers of the water column. However, the longer you wait before retrieving your intermediate line, the further the fly line falls and eventually it will sink to the bottom. Generally intermediate lines have a sink rate of one inch per second. These lines are ideal for avoiding surface wake on calm days which can easily spook fish, or when fishing in shallower water.

Alternatively you may wish to use a sinking or floating line to obtain a different sink rate.
