About the Welshman's Button Trout Fly
The Welshman's Button is also known as the Welshman's Button Winged Caperer, or the Caperer for short. Whatever the the name it is referred to by fishermen, it is a very successful sedge pattern.
Although originally intended for the gentle chalk streams of Southern England, it has also proved to be equally successful in the rough and tumble fast flowing rivers as well as in still waters.
Sedges are found on most waters, so fly boxes should have a place for this proven fly.
Expert Tip:
William Lunn was a river keeper on the river Test, a very practical man who only used in his fly dressings materials he could get for himself locally.

This trout fly is designed to be fished on Rivers & Streams, Still Water
Pattern Dressings
- Hook : 12-14.
- Thread : Crimson.
- Body : Four or five strands of cinnamon turkey tail feather.
- Centre of Body : Two strands of swan feather dyed yellow.
- Wings : Coot, bleached and dyed chocolate brown.
- Hackle: Medium Rhode Island cock.
- Shoulder Hackle : Black coot.
The two strands of yellow swan feather or substitute fibres form a ring in the centre of the body.
The hackles are tied in front of the wing. Rhode Island then the black coot just behind the eye.
